Ways the Advancement of Technology has Improved Education

Over the last two decades technology has been increasingly present in our day-to-day lives, whether it be at home, at work or at school. We use forms of technology to write our shopping lists, as an alarm to wake us up in the morning, and to do homework, amongst other things, and are becoming increasingly dependent on it as it evolves. No generation is more at ease with technology and its benefits than today’s generation. Online technologies have allowed students to immerse themselves in computing environments where pen and paper are hardly used – compared to previous generations. Instead most arrive at their classes armed with smart phones, laptops, or tablets – all of which have substantial implications on both their education and educational institutions as a whole, changing the way their students learn and that universities teach.

Students are able to Develop Valuable Skills

Technology has the potential to help close the skills gap that some students may be facing and struggling with. Computers and other technologies can help students address and work on the skills they need in a new and more interesting way, keeping them motivated and engaged. Technology enables students to improve the likes of their digital learning, planning, problem solving, communication, research, time management, self-direction skills and more. All of which they will need when they have finished their studies and are applying for a job in their field of interest.

Distance Learning Provides more Learning Opportunities

Distance learning, or online learning, is gradually gaining more momentum and better recognition in academic institutions across the globe, as more and more universities add online courses to their selection of offerings. Some of the options would include the likes of an MBA in Singapore or a BA Photography in Hawaii where students would receive their assignments online and complete them by sending their images, course work, or essays through the institution’s online portal or via email. Online courses, with the help of advanced technologies, are being seen as a key way in advancing and increasing the access to education around the globe, as online classes and courses bring the classroom closer to those students who cannot attend or do not have access to a traditional classroom setting. Online learning also gives students more control over their learning meaning they can learn at the pace they feel more comfortable with, as well as giving more support (in comparison to what they would receive in a classroom full of students) via online teachers who communicate with them through online chat, email and video calling.

Availability of an Expanse of Information

Technology and the internet have enabled credible information to move from the pages of textbooks, and other academic resources, onto the web where it can be accessed at any time and from anywhere from a click of the button. This is an advantage for both students and teachers who can utilize the web to gain the information they need quickly and from a reliable online source. The internet has also provided students with an array of knowledge and different opinions, enabling them to be exposed to more than what is written in a single textbook. The fact that students have access to the abundance of quality information that the web offers, enables students to learn at a much quicker pace than ever before, supplying them with the important knowledge and skills that they will need. There are numerous ways in which technology has, and continues to have, a positive effect on education, student achievement and academic performance, redefining education as we know it.
