Sharp 8K TV Tech was on show at CES 2015 this year, but until now it was not available for sale. From next month the company will begin taking orders in Japan for the first commercially available 8K TV. The plate, which has a resolution 16 times that of Full HD, will enter the market at a glance wateringly high price point.
The IGZO panel has a resolution of 7680 x 4320, a contrast ratio of 100,000: 1 and 176 degree viewing angle. The full 8K resolution that pushes so many pixels four 4K panels cooperate, is achieved by the use of four HDMI 2.0 inputs, each contribution of Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) image.
If you are familiar with 4K TVs, then you will know that Ultra-HD content is not all that easy at the moment. Some streaming services like Netflix offer a limited number of 4K content, but you will need to access a pretty decent Internet connection to it. Samsung is also set to release a 4K Blu-ray player, but it is not scheduled to land until next year. That being the case, then it is likely some time worth before 8K media makes its way to 8K television.
Sharp therefore seeks the new TV at professionals rather than consumers, and it can be used to test help 8K transmissions across the board. Which is probably for the best, as it set at a somewhat unfriendly wallet ¥ 16 million, or approximately US $ 133,000.
The panel is to go on sale in Japan on 30 October, with deliveries expected about three months later.
